The war is desperately unpopular at home, and at first Germany thought it could hide its troops in a peaceful corner of Afghanistan where nothing much would happen. Today, Germany fights under NATO in Afghanistan somewhat reluctantly. What an irony that, today, America and its allies want to bring some of the old Prussian spirit back to Germany. Bush who saw the desirability and the inevitability of having Germany come together again. And how Margaret Thatcher and FranГ§ois Mitterrand howled when Germany was on the verge of reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was said in the post-war years, not entirely in jest, that the reason for NATO was to keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down. Yet the fear of the old Prussian military spirit lingered on. No doubt they thought that by eliminating Prussia they would hit at the very heart of German militarism. It was banished, first by Hitler, who abolished all German states, and then by the allies who singled out Prussia for oblivion as Germany was being reconstituted under their occupation. Today Prussia does not even exist on the map, not even as a province of Germany. And German militarism would go on to dominate the first half of 20th century history.
